Japanese: パントゥン（英語表記）Pantun

A Malay folk quatrain. It consists of two lines in the first stanza and two lines in the second stanza (usually four words per line), with the first and third lines and the second and fourth lines rhyming together. The content is as follows: "Where does the turtledove dance, descending from the stream to the rice/Where does the love come from the eyes to the heart" (translated by Saito Masao): the first stanza sings of a natural scene, and the second stanza sings of the poem's theme, the love. The relationship between the first and second stanzas is often "so," as in the above example, but it is not rare to find "nevertheless" or some other more mysterious allusion.

マレーの民族的な四行詩。前句2行と後句2行 (各行4語が普通) から成り，第1行と第3行，第2行と第4行の脚韻をそろえる。内容的には，「いずこより山鳩舞いて，沢より稲へ下り来ぬ/いずこよりかの恋心，目より心へ下り来ぬ」 (斎藤正雄訳) のように，前句で自然の景物をうたい，後句で詩の主題である恋心などをうたう。前後の句の関係は，上記の例のように，「そのように」である場合が多いが，「それにもかかわらず」とか，さらに謎めいた暗示である場合も少くない。
