…Originally, organic matter was defined as a substance that an organism, i.e., a living organism, can produce only by using the power (vital energy) inherent to that organism, and inorganic matter was defined as a substance that can be produced without the aid of a living organism. Prior to this, in the best-selling textbook Cours de Chymie written by Nicolas Lemery (1645-1715) in 1675, substances were classified as mineral, vegetable, or animal depending on where they were extracted, and many organic compounds were classified as minerals. In 1811, JJ Berzelius proposed classifying substances into organic and inorganic, defining the former as substances that do not obey the law of definite proportions or the law of multiple proportions (a definition he later retracted). …
