A security that indicates a specific person as the right holder on its face is called a registered security, while a security that has no right holder and is recognized as the right holder is called an unregistered security. In addition to unregistered securities, there are also unregistered securities that indicate the right holder abstractly, such as "holder" or "bearer" (unregistered securities or unregistered securities), and unregistered securities that indicate a specific person as the right holder and state that the holder or bearer of the security may also be the right holder (unregistered securities).

証券面に特定の者を権利者として表示した有価証券を記名証券，権利者の表示がなく証券の所持人が権利者と認められる有価証券を無記名証券という。無記名証券には，権利者の表示がまったくないもののほかに，〈所持人〉〈持参人〉のように抽象的に表示するもの(所持人払証券または持参人払証券)，特定の者を権利者として表示するとともに，証券の所持人または持参人も権利者となることができる旨の記載があるもの(選択無記名証券)とがある。
