...A niche was carved on the east side, where funerals were held and people communicated with the deceased. Later, an entrance was made on the east side, and a false door (a niche in the shape of a door for worship that connects the dead with the living) was placed on the northeast side, making it a small funeral hall. From the end of the 3rd Dynasty, cross-shaped chambers began to be built within the tomb walls, and from the 4th Dynasty onwards, the chambers within the tombs developed, some with corridors, and serdāb (a closed room containing a statue of the dead) was built on the south or north side of the shrine hall....
