Te Deum (English spelling) [Latin]

Japanese: テ･デウム（英語表記）Te Deum[ラテン]

This hymn begins with the words "Te Deum laudamus (We praise thee in God)." Its name is derived from the first two words. There is a theory that it was composed by Ambrose, Bishop of Milan in the 4th century, or that when Augustine was baptized by Ambrose, the two men were inspired to compose one verse each on the spot, but the exact origin is unknown. However, it certainly dates back to the 5th or 4th century, and recent research has pointed to its connection to Gallic chant and the Mozarabic liturgy.

〈Te Deum laudamus(神にまします御身をわれらたたえ)〉という言葉で始まる賛歌。最初の2語をとって呼ばれる。4世紀のミラノの司教アンブロシウスの作とする説，あるいはアウグスティヌスがアンブロシウスの手で洗礼を受けたとき，霊感に打たれた二人が，その場で交互に1句ずつ作ったとする言い伝えがあるが，正確な起源は不明。ただし5世紀ないし4世紀までさかのぼることは確実で，近来の研究はガリア聖歌およびモサラベ典礼との関係を指摘している。
