A relationship between two people in which certain actions are prohibited. A system of behavioral norms appropriate to the social distance between the members of a society is established, and in a shunning relationship, it is strictly obligatory to observe these norms. For example, very detailed prohibitions are applied, such as not eating together, not calling someone by their name, not entering their residential area, not speaking obscene language, etc., and severe punishment is imposed if they are not observed. Such shunning relationships are particularly seen between people who are related by marriage or between people of different sexes, and the relationship usually lasts a lifetime. They are seen all over the world, mainly in tribal societies in Africa. The opposite of a shunning relationship is a "joking relationship."
