Japanese: ハタオリドリ(機織鳥) - ハタオリドリ（英語表記）weaver

A general term for birds of the passerine order Ploceidae family. Total length 11-26 cm. In some species, the male's tail feathers grow significantly longer during the breeding season, reaching a total length of nearly 50 cm including the tail feathers. The beak is short, thick, and pointed. Most of the birds have small bodies, but they are sturdy. The wings are relatively rounded, with 10 primary flight feathers. They are very similar to the maple butterflies, and some consider them to be in the same family, but the chicks of the Ploceidae family do not have the colored projections seen in the mouths of maple butterflies.

スズメ目ハタオリドリ科Ploceidaeの鳥の総称。全長11～26cm。一部の種では繁殖期に雄の尾羽が著しく長く伸長し，それを入れると全長が50cm近くなる。くちばしは短くて，分厚く，先がとがっている。体は小さいものが多いが，がんじょうである。翼は比較的丸く，初列風切が10枚ある。カエデチョウ科とよく似ていて同一の科と見るむきもあるが，ハタオリドリ科の雛にはカエデチョウ科の雛の口中に見られる色のついた突起がない。
