...A haiku poet from the early to mid-Edo period. His surname was Inbe, also Yasomura, and his common name was Yojiemon, and his given name was Iki. There are various theories about his origins, including that he was from Mino, Kyoto, or Tsukushi, but it is unclear. He is said to have been of Shinto priestly descent. At the age of 26, he became a beggar and wandered around the country, and in March 1685 (Jokyo 2), he met Basho in Matsumoto, Zeze, and became his disciple. In 1688, he went to Edo and lived near Basho's hermitage. His first haiku was in Hokku 9, published in 1689 (Genroku 2).
