Sea of Azov - Azovskoye more
A shallow inland sea located north of the Black Sea. It spans southeastern Ukraine and southwestern Russia, and is surrounded by the Crimean Peninsula (Krym Peninsula) and the Kuban River Delta lowlands. It is connected to the Black Sea by the Kerch Strait and to Lake Sibash in the west by the Genichesk Strait. It is about 350 km long from west-southwest to east-northeast, about 150 km wide at the center, and has an area of 38,000 km2 . It is the shallowest sea in the world, with an average depth of 9 m and a maximum depth of about 14 m. It freezes over from the end of December to the end of February. The coastal currents that flow counterclockwise form characteristic sand spits on the east and north shores, and the long and narrow Cape Arabat on the west shore. The salinity of the seawater is low due to the inflow of the Don River, the Kuban River, the Mius River, and other rivers. The fishing industry is thriving, with sturgeon, pike, carp, mullet, and herring being the main catches, and the main fishing ports are Eysk and Temryuk in Russia on the east coast. Other major coastal ports include Rostov-on-Don and Taganrog in Russia, and Mariupol and Kerch in Ukraine.
