Lectins

A general term for proteins that recognize and bind to glycans. Many are isolated from plant seeds, but animal-derived lectins are also known. Concanavalin A (ConA) from jack beans exists as a tetramer with a molecular weight of 1.04×10 ⁵ (2.6×10 ⁴ ×4) and has affinity for mannose and glucose. Each subunit contains a glycan-binding site and Mn ²⁺ and Ca ²⁺ . By binding to glycoproteins on the cell surface, it has the ability to aggregate cells and induce cell division. Wheat germ agglutinin WGA (wheat germ agglutinin) is an assembly of two subunits with a molecular weight of 1.8×10 ⁴ , has strong binding strength with chitin oligosaccharides, and aggregates cancer cells and other cells via membrane proteins containing N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and N-acetylneuraminic acid residues.

糖鎖を認識し，結合するタンパク質の総称．植物の種子から単離されたものが多いが，動物由来のレクチンも知られている．タチナタマメ由来のコンカナバリンA(ConA)は分子量1.04×10⁵(2.6×10⁴×4)の四量体として存在し，マンノースやグルコースに親和性を有する．各サブユニットには糖鎖結合部位と Mn^2＋ および Ca^2＋ が含まれている．細胞表面の糖タンパク質に結合することにより，細胞を凝集させたり，細胞分裂を誘起したりする活性を有する．小麦胚芽由来の凝集素WGA(wheat germ agglutinin)は分子量1.8×10⁴ のサブユニット2個が集まったもので，キチンオリゴ糖との結合力が強く，N-アセチル-D-グルコサミンやN-アセチルノイラミン酸残基を有する膜タンパク質を介して，がん細胞などを凝集させる．
