An ancient city in Bithynia, located in western Turkey, about 150 km southeast of Istanbul. Greek name Nikaia. Current Turkish name is Iznik. It faces Lake Iznik (ancient name Askania). It is famous as the site of two Councils of Nicaea, held in 325 and 787. The Byzantine walls surrounding the city, complete with gates and towers, are partially well preserved, but many of the former buildings are in ruins. Antigonia, founded by Antigonus I of Macedonia around 316 BC, was expanded by Lysimachus in 288 BC and named Nicaea after his wife. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
