Kitatama District

...In 1872, the Tama region, which was under the jurisdiction of Tokyo Prefecture, was transferred to Kanagawa Prefecture, but was soon reincorporated into Tokyo Prefecture. Then, in 1875-76, parts of Adachi and Katsushika counties in Saitama Prefecture were transferred to Tokyo Prefecture (Minami-Adachi and Minami-Katsushika counties). Next, in 1878, the Izu Islands were transferred from Shizuoka Prefecture, and in 1880, the Ogasawara Islands were transferred from the Ministry of the Interior. In 1893, the Tama region (then Nishi-Tama, Kita-Tama, and Minami-Tama counties) under Kanagawa Prefecture was also transferred, and the entire former Tama district was placed under its jurisdiction. Although there were several incorporations of smaller areas after that, the current Tokyo area was almost fixed. Meanwhile, under the County, Ward, Town, and Village Organization Act of 1878, Tokyo Prefecture was divided into 15 districts and 6 counties (Ebara, Minami-Toshima, Kita-Toshima, Minami-Katsushika, Higashi-Tama, and Minami-Adachi counties)....
