〘Noun〙 Characters said to have been used in ancient Japan before the introduction of Chinese characters. There are various types, such as Hifumi , Anaichi , and Ahiru characters. These have no definite examples from ancient times, and do not go beyond the Irohagana system, so today they are all considered to be provisional from later times. Hirata Atsutane's Shinji Hifumiden acknowledges their existence, while Ban Nobutomo's Kariji Honmatsu and other theories refute it. Divine characters. Ancient characters. *Ueda Mannen, for the sake of the national language (1895) , Arai Hakuseki as a linguist: "First I will explain the history of Chinese characters, and then I will explain the existence of ancient characters in Japan."
