Island of the Dead - Shinoshima

Island of the Dead - Shinoshima

A full-length novel by Fukunaga Takehiko. It was serialized intermittently in Bungei from January 1966 to 1971. It was published in 1971 by Kawade Shobo Shinsha in two volumes. Souma Kanae, an editor and aspiring writer, wakes up from a nightmare and goes to work, where he receives news of the suicide of his female friends Moegi Motoko and Aimi Ayako, and travels to Hiroshima. The story has a complex structure in which the 24 hours up to the next morning are the axis of the present, and past times are inserted in random order. Motoko is seized by a sense of despair towards humanity after the atomic bombing, and Ayako is deeply frustrated by the man she loves and has attempted suicide in the past. Souma loved both of them equally, but because of his impartiality, he was unable to save them. This is an experimental full-length novel that explores the roots of the inner world of humans, with themes of death and life as its theme.
