Toyo Rayon was established in 1926 with investment from Mitsui & Co., Ltd., and took on its current name in 1970. From prewar rayon production, the company quickly commercialized nylon after the war, and expanded into polyester and acrylic fibers, becoming Japan's largest synthetic fiber company. It also produces artificial leather, carbon fiber, and polyester film, and has also pioneered the medical field. It is actively expanding overseas. The head office is in Tokyo, with factories in Shiga, Ehime, Mishima, Nagoya, and others. Capital in 2011 was 147.8 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 1,539.6 billion yen.
