Shahn - Shahn (English spelling) Ben Shahn

Shahn - Shahn (English spelling) Ben Shahn

A typical social painter born in the 20th century America. He created a new image by combining painting and lettering. Born in Kovno, Lithuania, he moved to New York in 1906. He began his lithograph apprenticeship in 1913 and studied at New York University and other institutions. In 1932, he attracted attention with a series of works dealing with the Sacco-Vanzetti and Tom Mooney cases. From the 1930s to the 1940s, he worked as a painter, designer, and photographer, producing murals and posters. He continued to create energetically after the Second World War, frequently presenting at international and solo exhibitions, while also giving a series of lectures at Harvard University and other institutions. It is known that he visited Japan in 1960 (Showa 35) and painted a series of works on the Lucky Dragon No. 5 incident. His achievements can be broadly divided into two categories: one is the development of a methodology that draws social consciousness into pictorial form, and the other is the use of letters as a powerful means of pictorial expression. A retrospective of his work was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1961, and exhibitions of his work have been held around the country since his death.
