An autobiographical anti-literature novel by American author Henry Miller. Published in France in 1934 and in the United States in 1961. Disillusioned with the money-driven, anti-artistic American society, Miller travels to Paris virtually naked and penniless, living a bohemian life with his aspiring artist friends. There are no characters or plot in the traditional sense, but instead, realistic depictions of events are juxtaposed with metaphysical contemplations and the protagonist/narrator's monologue. Influenced by the Norwegian writer Hamsun, the French writer Celine, and the Americans Whitman and Thoreau, Miller criticizes the general human being in modern society who is bound by organizations, controlled by narrow-minded ideas, prejudice, and fear, and can only live a "life of death," and sings of the origins of new life. The "scream" of this artist, who is by no means young, is grounded in the eternal and universal nature of human beings and, at times, has a religious and mystical severity, and at other times, Rabelaisian humor, giving internal consistency to a novel that lacks consistency and structure.
