A perennial crop of the grass family, it is the staple food for about half the world's population. There are several cultivated plants in the Triticum genus, but bread wheat flour is best suited for making bread, so bread wheat currently accounts for about 90% of the world's cultivated wheat area. There are no wild species, and it is a species developed from hybrids during the wheat cultivation process. Based on the method of cultivation, it is broadly divided into autumn-sown and spring-sown wheat, and many varieties have evolved. All wheat cultivated in Japan is bread wheat.
