…In China, decoration using shells is said to have been practiced since the Western Zhou dynasty, but it was during the Tang dynasty that mother-of-pearl became popular and developed. During the Tang dynasty, wood painting techniques developed in Egypt and Western Asia were introduced, and wood mother-of-pearl, in which shells were inlaid into rosewood and other materials, was widely practiced. Other examples include tortoiseshell mother-of-pearl, resin-embedded mother-of-pearl, and black lacquer mother-of-pearl, many of which are preserved in the Shosoin Repository. …
