A group of islands scattered in the ocean south of Singapore Island in western Indonesia. It is made up of many hilly islets formed when the tip of the Malay Peninsula collapsed. The main islands are Bintan and Batam. Administratively, it belongs to the Riau province of Sumatra. It occupies a strategic location controlling the entrance to the Straits of Malacca, and has historically been the domain of many chiefs. The inhabitants are the Riawa people, a mix of Sumatran and Javanese, and many of them are fishermen. There is also a large Chinese population, and economic and industrial development is underway. Bauxite is also a specialty of the region. ^{3,663 km2} . Population: approximately 120,000.

インドネシア西部，シンガポール島の南方海上に散在する島群。マレー半島の先端が陥没して生じた多数の丘陵性小島からなる。ビンタン，バタムなどが主島。行政的にはスマトラのリアウ州に属する。マラッカ海峡入口を制する要地を占め，歴史上多くの首長が割拠した。住民はスマトラ人，ジャワ人の混血といわれるリアワ人で，漁民が多い。華人も多く，経済・工業開発が進められつつある。ボーキサイトの特産もある。3663km²。約12万人。
