...The attack on Constantinople by the Kievan rulers Askold and Zhir (brother princes) in 860 left a strong impression on the Byzantine people. In Novgorod in the north, the legendary Norman chieftain Rurik had conquered the Slavic prince Vadim and seized power, but after his death, the army of Oleg (reigned 882-912), the chieftain of the vassal band, who supported his son Igor, began to march south, defeating Askold and Zhir and becoming ruler of the city-state of Kiev. This was in 882, and Novgorod in the north and Kiev in the south came under the common rule of a single nominally Rurikid monarch, and thus the all-Russian Kievan Rus was born. ...
