A mercury mine in Kitami, Hokkaido. It was discovered in 1937 and developed by Nomura Mining from 1939. It is produced in association with metamorphic andesite, a Tertiary volcanic rock in the upper reaches of the Muka River, and is known for its particularly high natural mercury content. At its peak in 1944, annual production reached 196 tons, and in the early 1950s it remained at around 150 tons per year, but production subsequently declined due to resource depletion, falling prices, and reduced demand due to pollution issues, and the mine closed in 1973.
