It is a glacial lake that is filled with water in the U-shaped valley of the River Tees, and is surrounded by hills and forests such as Ben Venue Mountain (730m). The beautiful scenery, including Ellen Island in the lake, was the setting for W. Scott's "The Lady of the Lake." The lake water has been the source of water for Glasgow since 1859. …
