IrDA - Internet Design and Engineering

A method of communication using infrared light instead of connecting cables between information devices such as PCs and printers and information home appliances such as digital cameras and compact disc (CD) players. Three levels of modulation methods and data transfer speeds are specified according to the purpose. The name comes from the abbreviation for the Infrared Data Association, which has about 160 member companies around the world and unified the specifications that were previously used by each company into a standard. Using IrDA, it is possible to transfer data directly from a digital camera to a recording device, and to communicate with a PC from a mobile phone.

The standard (protocol) was developed mainly by Hewlett-Packard (HP), IBM, Microsoft, and Sharp. The standard for one-to-one communication is called IrDA DATA. IrDA DATA 1.0, established in 1994, has a data transfer speed of 2.4 to 115.2 kilobits per second (kbps) and a communication distance of 1 meter, and IrDA 1.1 to 1.4 standards have also been established for different communication speeds. The standard for communication with multiple devices is called IrDA Control, and the version established in 1998 can communicate with up to eight input devices, has a maximum transfer speed of 75 kbps, and a communication distance of 8 meters. IrDA was used in a packaged form, but with the emergence of Bluetooth in 1998, which allows for faster and longer distance communication, the uses of IrDA have been differentiated, and it has since been used in small devices such as mobile phones and portable game consoles.
