Bedrock is a broad base of rocks that exists at a certain depth beneath the surface of the Earth, and bedrock testing is a test to examine the strength and deformation of bedrock to determine its suitability as a base for supporting structures. Bedrock is stronger than soil made of clay or sand, so there have been attempts to estimate the mechanical properties of bedrock from the properties of rock, but not much attention has been paid to its mechanical properties until now. However, in recent years, as structures have become larger, such as undersea tunnels, bridges across straits, underground cavities for storing oil or gas, underground power plants, and large dams, it has become extremely important to know the mechanical properties of bedrock.

地球の表面下，ある深さのところに存在する岩石よりなる広い基盤を岩盤といい，岩盤試験は，岩盤の構造物支持基盤としての適否を判断するために，岩盤の強さや変形のしかたを調べる試験である。岩盤は粘土や砂で形成される地盤よりも強度が大きいので，岩石の性質から岩盤の力学的性質を推定しようとする試みはあったが，これまでその力学的性質についてさほど大きな関心が払われなかった。しかし，近年，構造物が大型化し，海底トンネル，海峡連絡橋，石油あるいはガス貯蔵用の地下空洞，地下発電所，大型ダムなどが次々に建設されるようになって，岩盤の力学的性質を知ることがきわめて重要となってきた。
