...Naturally, the content of the films is often centered on the fate of black people alienated within civilization = colonialism = white society. In Senegal, there are Ousmane Sembène (who studied under Marc Donskoy in Moscow and began making films), as well as Pauline Vieira, Blaise Senghor, Mahama Traoré, and Babacar Sam Macalam (whose first feature film, Kodou, won the Georges Sadoul Prize in France in 1971), Desiré Ecarré in Côte d'Ivoire (which gained independence in August 1960) who made his debut in Concerto for Exile (Grand Prix at the Yale Youth Film Festival in 1968), and Oumarou Ganda in Niger who began making films after appearing in J. Rouch's film I Am Black, but the greatest achievement of J. Rouch's "film education" was his 1974 film Cock-a-doodle-doo! The film, "The Chicken," is a French-Nigerian co-production, and was shot by two black actors, Damre Jika and Lam Ibrahi (both of whom have appeared in other films by Rouch), and Rouch himself, under the name "Dalarou," a composite of the first and last names of each of them. According to J. Rouch, "Lam came up with the idea of ​​a documentary film about chicken traders, and we decided to make a feature film based on that theme. Damre and Lam appeared with another colleague, Tarou Mouzrane, and each wrote their own lines, and I recorded simultaneously and filmed the film in a one-scene, one-take style, like a reportage film."
