The wolfhound originated in Ireland. It is known as the tallest dog in the world, with males reaching over 85cm and females over 75cm. In medieval Europe, this dog was used to hunt wolves and large deer, but there are also many anecdotes about it being used as a family dog to protect young children and families from predators while their owners were away. Its popularity declined after wolf hunting was discontinued, but today it is widely loved as an ornamental dog and family dog all over the world, thanks to its large and smart appearance, gentle personality, and beautiful coat colors that are coarse but include gray, brindle (tiger-colored), fawn (brown), black, and white.
