British electrical engineer and inventor. He played an important role in the practical application of transformers and AC power transmission and distribution. He was born in Liverpool, the son of an Italian photographer. At the age of 17, he joined Siemens Brothers and attended night lectures at University College, London. He acquired scientific knowledge mainly through self-study. In 1882, he invented the zigzag-wound AC generator and founded a company to manufacture it. In 1883, a power distribution system for lighting was built at the Glasvenor Gallery in London, and the system used an AC system using open-circuit transformers invented by L. Gaulard and others connected in series, but the system was plagued by accidents.

イギリスの電気技術者，発明家。変圧器および交流送配電の実用化に重要な役割を果たした。イタリア系の写真家の子としてリバプールに生まれた。17歳でジーメンス･ブラザース社に入り，ロンドンのユニバーシティ･カレッジの夜間の講義をきいた。おもに独学で科学知識を得た。1882年にジグザグ巻きの交流発電機を考案し，この発電機を製造するための会社をつくった。83年以来ロンドンのグラスベナー･ギャラリーに照明のための配電システムが建設され，そこでは，ゴラールL.Gaulardらの考案した開磁路変圧器を直列接続して使う交流システムが採用されたが，事故続きであった。
