1864‐1930 British electrical engineer and inventor. He played an important role in the practical application of transformers and AC power transmission and distribution. He was born in Liverpool, the son of an Italian photographer. At the age of 17, he joined Siemens Brothers and attended night lectures at University College, London. He acquired scientific knowledge mainly through self-study. In 1882, he invented the zigzag-wound AC generator and founded a company to manufacture it. In 1883, a power distribution system for lighting was built at the Glasvenor Gallery in London, and the system used an AC system using open-circuit transformers invented by L. Gaulard and others connected in series, but the system was plagued by accidents. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
