Around 1080-1154 An early scholastic philosopher. He belonged to the School of Chartres, and with the spirit of 12th-century humanism, he turned to the study of literature and natural science. In "Philosophy of the Universe," he expressed the idea that many things related to God can be explored through reason. He excelled in grammar, one of the seven liberal arts, and gained a reputation for surpassing his teacher, Bernard of Chartres. He wrote commentaries on Plato's "Timaeus" and Boethius' "The Consolation of Philosophy." [Izumi Harunori] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
