A kingdom in the interior of East Africa, in what is now Burundi. It was founded by the pastoral Tutsi people, who conquered the indigenous agricultural Hutu and pygmy Twa people. It was established towards the end of the 17th century, and in the first half of the 19th century it expanded to include parts of what is now Rwanda and Tanzania. The royal authority was weak, and the conflict between Tutsi and Hutu was not very pronounced, as a privileged class of royal descendants called the Ganwa held a status similar to that of feudal lords. The kingdom continued to exist as part of Ruanda-Urunji during the colonial period, and even after independence, but the monarchy was abolished in a coup in 1966.
