Junjiro Takakusu

A Buddhist scholar from the Meiji to Showa periods. Doctor of Literature. He went by the pen name Setcho. Born in Kagari, Yahata-cho, Mihara City, Hiroshima Prefecture, as the eldest son of Sawai Kanzo, he later moved to Motomachi, Kobe, and was adopted by Takakusu Magosaburo. In 1889 (Meiji 22), he graduated from Nishi Honganji Kyoto Normal School (now Ryukoku University). While he was a student, he formed the Hanseikai (Religious Society) and published the Hanseikai Zasshi (the predecessor of Chuokoron). In 1890, he traveled to Europe and studied Indian and Sanskrit under Professor Max Muller of Oxford University. During that time, he studied under great scholars at well-known universities in Germany, France, and Italy. During his time abroad, he translated works such as Kanmuriyū-kyō (Contemplation of the Sutra of Infinite Life) and Nankai-kiki-den (Translated from Japanese). He returned to Japan in 1897, and became a lecturer at the College of Letters of Tokyo Imperial University in June of the same year. He became a professor in 1899 at the age of 34, and became the first head professor of the Sanskrit course at the College of Letters in 1901 (Meiji 34). He served as principal of Tokyo School of Foreign Languages ​​(now Tokyo University of Foreign Studies) and president of Toyo University. He became a member of the Academy in 1926 (Taisho 15), and was awarded the Order of Culture in 1944 (Showa 19). He edited and authored the Complete Works of the Upanishads in nine volumes, the New Taisho Revised Tripitaka in 100 volumes, and the Complete Catalog of Showa Law Treasures in three volumes.

明治~昭和期の仏教学者。文学博士。雪頂(せっちょう)と号した。広島県三原市八幡(やはた)町字篝(かがり)、沢井観三の長男に生まれ、のち神戸市元町、高楠孫三郎の養子となる。1889年(明治22)西本願寺立京都普通教校(現、龍谷大学)を卒業。在学中に反省会を結成し、『反省会雑誌』(『中央公論』の前身)を刊行する。1890年渡欧し、オックスフォード大学のマックス・ミュラー教授に師事し、インド学・梵語(ぼんご)学を学ぶ。その間、ドイツ、フランス、イタリアの著名大学の碩学(せきがく)に師事する。留学中『観無量寿経(かんむりょうじゅきょう)』『南海寄帰伝(なんかいききでん)』などの英訳を行う。1897年帰国、同年6月東京帝国大学・文科大学講師となる。1899年34歳で教授となり、1901年(明治34)文科大学梵語学講座の初代担任教授となった。東京外国語学校(現、東京外国語大学)校長、東洋大学学長を歴任。1926年(大正15)学士院会員となり、1944年(昭和19)文化勲章を受章。『ウパニシャッド全書』全9巻、『大正新修大蔵経(だいぞうきょう)』全100巻、『昭和法宝総目録』全3巻の編著がある。
