Copper coins circulated in Korea during the Yi Dynasty. Minting was suspended after 1633 and 1651, but from 1678 they were issued regularly and spread throughout the country. Also called "Ye-sen," they have a perfect circle with a square hole and the four characters "Chongping Tongbao" engraved on it, with the characters indicating the government agency that minted them written on the back. In the second half of the 19th century, high-value coins such as Tou Hyaku Sen and Tou Go Sen were minted, but their quality was poor, which was one of the reasons for currency confusion. They were gradually collected as part of a project to consolidate Korean currency that began in 1905, and were replaced by coins issued by the colonial power.
