…大デュマの《一医師の追憶》を翻案した《仏国革命起源　西洋血潮小暴風（にしのうみちしおのさあらし）》(1882)で，原作にない熱烈な民権論を鼓吹したことで東洋のユゴーと呼ばれた桜田は83年に夭折するが，その志を継いで革命文学としての政治小説を精力的に執筆したのは宮崎夢柳(1855‐89)である。夢柳の代表作は，ロシアのテロリストを描いた《虚無党実伝記　鬼啾々（きしゆうしゆう）》(1884‐85)で，このころの群馬事件から秩父事件にいたる反政府闘争を背景に大きな反響を呼んだ。改進党系の政治小説でもっともすぐれた作品は，矢野竜渓の《斉武名士　経国美談》(1883‐84)である。…
