JL Lagrange was a mathematician from the same era as Laplace, and is known for his works such as Analytical Mechanics (1788) and Theory of Analytical Functions (1797). At the end of the 18th century, he believed that mathematics could no longer make any substantial progress. However, around the turn of the century, a completely new trend in mathematics began to emerge.
