RHEED - RHEED

Abbreviation for reflective high energy electron diffraction. Unlike X-rays, electrons have an electric charge and have a strong interaction with matter. For this reason, electron beams cannot penetrate deeply into materials. Taking advantage of this property, an electron beam accelerated to several tens of keV in an ultra-high vacuum is irradiated just above the surface of an object, and the diffraction image obtained from the reflected electron beam can reveal the structure near the surface. Because it can be easily obtained in real time, it is used to analyze not only the atomic arrangement structure of solid surfaces, but also crystal growth, and the adsorption and desorption processes on solid surfaces.

reflective high energy electron diffraction(反射高速電子回折装置)の略称．電子はX線と異なり電荷をもっており，物質との相互作用が強い．このため，電子線は物質の表面から深く貫入することができない．この性質を利用して，超高真空中，数十 keV で加速された電子線を物体の表面すれすれに照射し，反射電子線から得られる回折像より，表面近傍の構造を知ることができる．容易にリアルタイムで知ることができるので，固体表面の原子配列構造だけでなく，結晶成長，固体表面の吸着，脱離過程などの分析に利用される．
