For this reason, electron beams cannot penetrate deeply into materials. Taking advantage of this property, an electron beam accelerated to several tens of keV in an ultra-high vacuum is irradiated just above the surface of an object, and the diffraction image obtained from the reflected electron beam can reveal the structure near the surface. Because it can be easily obtained in real time, it is used to analyze not only the atomic arrangement structure of solid surfaces, but also crystal growth, and the adsorption and desorption processes on solid surfaces.
