All Quiet on the Western Front

All Quiet on the Western Front

A full-length novel by German author Remarque. Published in 1929. The protagonist, a student volunteer named Paul, is the author's alter-ego who served in World War I. Through the soldier's wartime experiences, the author explores the meaninglessness and emptiness of war. On the desolate front line, the teachings of the gospel and reincarnation are merely the words of another life, and philosophy is merely a useless study. To a private soldier, the name of the Fatherland is worthless. The fragility of human life, which is governed by chance, is clearly shown by Paul's death in battle, but it ends with a single report that "all is well." On the battlefield, the life and death of a human being is decided by a piece of paper. On the front line, beautiful feelings of comradeship and solidarity are born among soldiers, but this does not lead to the glorification of war. This work became a best-seller, translated into 29 languages as an indictment of war, and was made into a film in the United States in 1930 (directed by Lewis Milestone). It was also burned during the Nazi era.
