Izumo Grand Shrine

Japanese:
Izumo Grand Shrine

It is located in Izumo, Chitose-cho, Kameoka City, Kyoto Prefecture. It is commonly called Motoizumo, and is also called Chitoseguu because it has Chitoseyama (Mikageyama, Mikageyama) as its sacred mountain. The enshrined deities are said to be Oonamuchi-no-Mikoto (Okuninushi-no-Mikoto) and Mihotsuhime-no-Mikoto, but there are other theories. According to the shrine's legend, it was enshrined during the reign of Emperor Sujin, and the main shrine was built in 709 (Wado 2) during the reign of Emperor Genmei. In 818 (Kōnin 9), it was made a Myōjin (myōjin), in 845 (Jōwa 12) it was promoted to Jūju Gōge (Junior Fifth Rank), and in 910 (Engi 10) it was promoted to Shōshijō (Senior Fourth Rank). In the Engishiki (Acts of the Engishiki), it is listed as a Myōjin Taisha (myōjin shrine) as "Izumo Shrine, Kuwata County, Tamba Province," and it flourished as the Ichinomiya (Ichinomiya) of Tamba Province. It was formerly a nationally-beloved medium-sized shrine. The main hall is in the Sangensha Nagare-zukuri style, and is a nationally important cultural property. The annual festival is held on October 21st. At the Flower Festival on April 18th, the Furyu Hanaodori (elegant flower dance) is dedicated.
