A master craftsman of Kyoto ware in the late Edo period. The 11th generation of Nishimura Zengoro. Born into the Oriya Sawai family in Kyoto, he was adopted by the 10th generation Nishimura Zengoro Ryozen at around the age of 13 with the help of the Daitokuji temple priest Daiko. In July 1827, he was given the name "Hozen", taken from the Zhuangzi by Fujiwara Koei. In October of the same year, accompanied by the 10th generation Omotesenke Soza (Kyuusai), he participated in the Kairakuen ware pottery and garden ware pottery at the Nishihama Palace, the villa of Tokugawa Harutaka of the Kishu domain, together with his father Ryozen, and was awarded the gold seal of "Kawahama branch" and the silver seal of "Eiraku". In 1843, he handed the name of Zengoro to his eldest son Wazen, and changed his name to Zenichiro. In 1849, he was given the character "Tojun" by the Takatsukasa family, and was also called Tojunken. In 1847, when he adopted Sozaburo, the second son of lacquer artist Sano Nagahiro, discord arose between him and Wazen, and research into the development of pottery techniques also put a strain on the finances of the Zengoro family, so in 1850, he went to Edo to seek refuge with the Mitsui family, but on his way back to Kyoto the following year, he stayed in Otsu in Omi and founded Konan ware. In 1852, he was invited to make Takatsuki ware in the garden of Takatsuki Domain lord Nagai Naoteru, but returned to Konan ware in the same year, and in 1853, he established the official kiln for the Enman-in Monzeki Palace, and used seals such as "Mitsui Mihama," "Chotoyama," and "Kahama" on his works. Hoshinobu's style of work included all the pottery techniques from China, Korea, and Japan that were admired at the time, such as Kochi (Hokka), Celadon, Old Blue and White, Shozui, Akae, Kinrande, Ninsei copies, and Goryeo copies, and he made all of these his own, going beyond mere imitation and creating new tea ware that reflected the tastes of the time in both design and glaze techniques.
