Gongju-eup corresponds to Ungjin (Kungcheon), where the capital was moved from Hansanseong in the first year of King Munju's reign (475). It was the capital of Baekje during the middle period for 63 years over five generations until the capital was moved to Sabi (present-day Buyeo) in the 16th year of King Seongmyeong's reign (538).
