(1) One of the dimensions of the base paper, measuring 636 x 939 mm. From when it was imported from overseas at the beginning of the Meiji era, it was the standard size of paper in Japan along with the shirokuban until the standard dimensions of the A-size and B-size were established at the beginning of the Showa era. There are various theories about the origin of the name, but one theory is that the trademark attached to this paper when it was first imported resembled a chrysanthemum flower. (2) A size not specified by the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS). The size of the above paper (full kikuban paper) cut into 16 pieces, approximately 152 x 218 mm. Relatedly, the size of the kikuban folded along its long side (approximately 109 x 151 mm) is called the "kikuhansetsuban" (half-cut kiku size), and the size twice the size of the kikuban (approximately 218 x 303 mm) is called the "kikubaiban" (double kiku size).
