Widely distributed throughout Southeast Asia, it is divided into one genus and eight species, including the white-handed gibbon ( Hylobates lar ), the hoolock gibbon (H. hooloch) , and the black-and-white gibbon (H. concolor) , based mainly on differences in fur color, but the white-and-white gibbon (Hylobates lar) is sometimes classified as a separate genus.
