Rival emperor of the Western Roman Empire. Reigned 472. Born to a noble Roman family, he was taken to Africa with the surviving members of Valentinian III's family during the Vandal sack of Rome in 455, and later returned to the Eastern emperor. He married Valentinian III's youngest daughter, and became a relative of the Vandal king Gaiseric, whose son was already married to Valentinian III's elder daughter. In 472, as the conflict between the Western emperor Anthemius and Ricimer developed into a civil war, Ricimer, at Gaiseric's insistence, supported him as Western emperor, but he died just a few months after the deaths of Anthemius and Ricimer in the same year.

西ローマ帝国の対立帝。在位472年。ローマの名門貴族の出で，455年バンダルのローマ市略奪の折に，ウァレンティニアヌス3世の遺族と共にアフリカへ連行され，のちに東帝のもとへ送還される。ウァレンティニアヌス3世の末娘と結婚し，すでに姉娘を息子の妃としていたバンダル王ガイセリックの姻戚となる。472年，西帝アンテミウスとリキメルの対立が内乱に発展する中で，ガイセリックの強要を背景にリキメルによって西帝位に擁立されたが，同年アンテミウスとリキメルの死後，わずか数ヵ月で没した。
