Japanese: 菊原初子 - きくはらはつこ
Hatsuko Kikuhara

The head of the Nogawa school of jiuta and a practitioner of Ikuta school koto music. His real name was Nunohara Hajime. He was born in Osaka. Under the guidance of his grandfather Kikuue Akito, a daikengyo (master of the shogun), and his father Kikuhara Kotoji (1878-1944), he mastered jiuta, Ikuta school koto music, Nogawa school shamisen kumiuta, and all of the Ikuta school koto kumiuta, and has passed down to the present day all of the rare pieces handed down only to the Kikuhara family. In 1957 (Showa 32), jiuta was selected as an intangible cultural property, and he recorded and preserved several pieces, including "Hiraya Komatsu" and "Fuyukusa." Since then, he has continued to complete many works, including the record "The History of Koto Music and Jiuta" (1961), with his accurate and reliable style of performance. In 1979, he was recognized as a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property of jiuta.
