American National Standards Institute. A non-profit organization that works to standardize industrial standards. Founded in 1918. In 1969, the former ASA was reorganized and renamed ANSI. It is the equivalent of Japan's JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards). Its headquarters are in Washington.
[Additional information] Standards established by ANSI are called ANSI standards, and are equivalent to Japan's JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards). Standards are not established by ANSI, but by private standardization organizations (SDOs: Standards Developing Organizations) certified by ANSI. Standards created by SDOs and approved by ANSI are adopted as ANSI standards, which are among the national standards of the United States.

[補説]ANSIが定める規格はANSI規格と呼ばれ、日本のJIS（日本産業規格）に相当する。規格の策定は、ANSIではなく、ANSIが認定した民間の標準化団体（SDO：Standards Developing Organizations、規格開発機構）が行う。SDOが作成し、ANSIが承認したものが、米国の国家規格の一つであるANSI規格として採用される。
