The "paragone," or "controversy over the superiority of painting and sculpture," held in 1547 by Benedetto Varchi (1502-65), director of the Florentine Academy, is a famous incident that shows the close contest between non-classical pictorial vision and traditional linear vision in the mid-16th century, with one side based on the new dynamism created by Leonardo. This direction would eventually achieve complete victory in the Baroque.
