Within the city are the remains of the Roman agora, the remains of a palace associated with Galerius, a triumphal arch, and a huge rotunda built as a mausoleum. The rotunda was renamed the Church of Agios Georgios around 400 and was soon decorated with typical early Christian mosaics. Thessaloniki is characterized by its Byzantine churches and the mosaics and frescoes that adorn its interiors, many of which are important examples. …
