[Died] April 10, 1962. Hollywood, California, United States. Hungarian-born American film director. His real name was Mihály Kertész. He launched such stars as Errol Flynn, Danny Thomas, and Doris Day into the world. After joining a circus at the age of 17, he studied acting in Budapest. He worked as an actor and film director in several European countries before moving to the United States in 1926. In the 1930s, he directed nearly 50 films for Warner Brothers. Some of Flynn's adventure films include Captain Blood (1935), The Charge of the Light Brigade (1936), The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), and The Sea Hawk (1940). He won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director for Casablanca (1942), starring Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart, and later films such as Mildred Pierce (1945), White Christmas (1954), and Francis of Assisi (1961).

Curtiss, Glenn (Hammond)

Born May 21, 1878 in Hammondsport, New York.
[Died] July 23, 1930. Buffalo, New York. One of the pioneers of aviation in the United States. In 1909, he made a successful flight in the Gold Bug, and in 1911, he took off and landed on water in a floatplane equipped with floats. In 1912, he developed the world's first flying boat. These achievements led to a contract for the development of carrier-based aircraft from the U.S. Navy, and the company's products were also exported to Britain and Russia. The best-known Curtiss aircraft was the single-engine Jenny biplane with a 90 horsepower engine. More than 6,400 were manufactured, and it was widely used as a trainer in the United States, Canada, and Europe during World War I. After the war, it was used by touring aerobatic troupes and for mail transport over the Canadian Rockies. During World War I, Curtiss was sued by the Wright Company for infringing the Wright Brothers' patents, but the two companies later settled and merged to become Curtiss-Wright.

[Died] March 10, 1953. American inventor who invented the steam turbine, which is widely used at the Central Islip Power Station in New York and for marine propulsion. He also worked as a patent attorney for eight years. In 1896, he patented the steam turbine (compound speed impulse turbine). Its principle is still used today in large ocean liners and naval vessels, and the patent rights to a land-based device were sold to General Electric (GE) and are used in power generation facilities around the world. In 1899, he patented the first gas turbine in the United States. He was a friend of Thomas Alva Edison, and held several patents for improvements to diesel engines, as well as contributing to the development of torpedo propulsion devices.

Curtis, Cyrus Hermann Kotzschmar

[Died] June 7, 1933. Wyncote, Pennsylvania. American publisher. He was involved in magazine publishing from his boyhood, and in 1879 he launched The Ladies' Home Journal, a magazine for housewives, in Philadelphia, which became a huge success. He also published many other newspapers and magazines through acquisitions and launches.

アメリカ合衆国の航空開拓者の一人。 1909年『ゴールド・バグ』号で飛行に成功，1911年フロートをつけた水上機で離着水し，1912年には世界最初の飛行艇を開発した。こうした実積によってアメリカ海軍から艦載機の開発契約を受け，製品はイギリスやロシアにも輸出された。カーティス機のなかで最もよく知られているのは JN-4ジェニー複葉単発機で，90馬力のエンジンを搭載，6400機以上が製造され，第1次世界大戦中は練習機としてアメリカ，カナダ，ヨーロッパで広く使われた。戦後も巡業曲技飛行団やカナダのロッキー山脈越えの郵便輸送に用いられた。カーティスは第1次世界大戦中，ライト社からライト兄弟の特許侵害で訴えられたが，のちに和解するとともに合併し，カーティス・ライトとなった。

発電所や舶用推進に幅広く使われる蒸気タービンを発明したアメリカ合衆国の発明家。特許弁護士としても 8年間活動した。1896年蒸気タービン（速度複式衝動タービン）の特許を取得。その原理は今日でも大型遠洋定期船や海軍艦艇などに用いられるほか，陸上用装置の特許権はゼネラル・エレクトリック GEに売却され，世界各地の発電施設で使用されている。1899年にはアメリカ初のガスタービンの特許を取得。トーマス・アルバ・エジソンと親交があり，ディーゼルエンジンの改良に関する特許も複数保有するほか，魚雷の推進装置の開発にも貢献した。
