They are often mentioned in the classics of the pre-Qin period, and are understood as facial vessels (things that have a shape) and demon vessels (vessels for the dead) in contrast to the formal vessels and ritual vessels used in real life. They are also called murder vessels, treasured vessels, and secret vessels, and this is still followed in modern Chinese archaeology.
