A delicious bivalve mollusks of the family Psammidae, a specialty of the Ariake Sea (illustration). The shell is egg-cylindrical, measuring 8 cm long, 5 cm high, and 4 cm in bulge. It is pale white and covered with a pale yellow skin. The front and back ends of both shells are wide apart, and the edge of the front end is everted with a willow-leaf-shaped lime plate on top. Radiating ribs extend from the apex of the shell's surface, and spines are formed where these and growth veins intersect, with the spines being stronger towards the front. The moth moves this to dig into the mud. Two water tubes join at the rear end to form a thick, long tube that is enclosed in a blackish sheath.
