It is a xanthoflagellate of the order Philadelphagiales and the family Philadelphaceae. It lives in freshwater. It is a single cell with a single terminal hair and swims, but sometimes the cell body can transform into an amoeba. After the swimming period, it gathers on the surface of the water and forms a thin, membrane-like colony. In this case, the yellow plastids in the cells are cup-shaped, and when weak light is shone on them from one side, they line up in a certain direction to make the most effective use of the light, so the light is reflected in the same direction and the algae appear to shine a beautiful golden color. This phenomenon can also be seen when the side of a well, a cave wall, or a tunnel entrance where this colony is growing is viewed with its back to a light source.
